The inaugural show at Lamington Drive Gallery. New Works by webuyyourkids. a Sydney-based illustration partnership comprised of poster artists Biddy Maroney and Sonny Day. Their exhibition Surrender explores witchcraft “hexploitation” through drawings and both digital and hand-pulled screen-prints.
The emphasis is on popular culture’s representation of witches, especially through movies and music, looking at the graphic symbols used to depict witchcraft – from the clichéd witches hat to actual occult imagery and symbology. Their influences come from movies as diverse as The Wizard Of Oz and Suspiria, and the imagery associated with various doom metal and psych bands such as Black Sabbath and Electric Wizard. The overall theme is the depiction of women as mysterious beings.
